A Bellefonte cross-country runner selected as Centre Daily Times Athlete of the Week

The readers of CentreDaily.com have selected a Bellefonte cross-country runner as the athlete of the week for Oct. 9-15.

Bellefonte boys’ cross-country’s Alex Crist earned a victory in the LHAC Dual Meet Championships in the rain. He won the race with a time of 17:11. He had 2,507 votes in the poll, or 69%.

Here were the other athlete of the week nominees:

Jarrett Stover, Penns Valley football: Penns Valley football came from behind to defeat Somerset on Oct. 13 thanks to a fumble recovery that sealed the victory. Jarrett Stover recovered a fumble in the end zone to ice the win, his second turnover that helped earn a victory this season. He had a pick-six against Philipsburg-Osceola earlier this season to prevent a comeback.

Lilyanna Smith, Penns Valley cross-country: Penns Valley girls’ cross country defeated Bald Eagle during the voting week, with Lilyanna Smith earning a first place finish. Smith, a sophomore, recorded a time of 21:12 and will anchor the team during the postseason.

Carson Long, Philipsburg-Osceola football and soccer: Philipsburg-Osceola’s Carson Long had another big week in two sports. He scored five goals for the boys’ soccer team, with a hat trick in a 4-2 win over Clearfield and two more against Bishop Carroll in a 5-1 victory. He accounted for five points in the football team’s win over Westmont Hilltop, kicking a 30-yard field goal and hitting both of his extra point attempts.

Sophie Granville, Philipsburg-Osceola volleyball: Philipsburg-Osceola volleyball went 3-0 during the week with victories over Central Mountain, Bellwood-Antis and Huntingdon. Sophie Granville helped the team earn all three wins in straight sets with 28 kills, 21 digs and 4 aces. She came in second in the poll, with 867 votes, or 24%.

For the CDT’s Athlete of the Week polls this season, we will take nominations from all six county athletic departments for both a boys’ and girls’ athlete of the week. Due to the number of nominations last week, girls’ and boys’ athletes were combined into one poll. Voting for this poll ended Sunday.

As a reminder, the poll is not scientific and just for fun. In fact, we invite you to vote as many times as you want. Look for future polls at CentreDaily.com.
