Results: Bellefonte football player selected as Centre Daily Times boys’ athlete of the week

A Bellefonte football player was selected by readers of CentreDaily.com as the boys’ athlete of the week for Oct. 23-29.

Bellefonte football’s Sherman Lowry — a team captain — eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the second time this season in the team’s 14-13 win over Somerset. Lowry finished with 10 carries for 106 yards and a touchdown, along with 28 kick return yards and four tackles on defense.

He had 1,784 votes in the poll, or 85%.

Here’s a look at the other nominees:

Colin Simander, Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy cross country: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s Colin Simander became a four-time state qualifier when he finished ninth in the District 6 Cross Country Championships. His time of 17:36.80 helped the boys’ cross country team finish in seventh place.

Isaac Opperman, State College cross country: State College’s Isaac Opperman led the field at the District 6 Cross Country Championships turning in a time of 15:55.90 to claim the individual district title. He and his Little Lion teammates won the team championship, sweeping the top five spots. They will now prepare for the PIAA Championships Saturday in Hershey.

Penns Valley cross country: The Penns Valley cross country team took second place at the District 6 Cross Country Championships to clinch a spot in the PIAA Championships. Dilon Reilly medaled, finishing in seventh place, to pace the Rams who have been without key runner McClain Reamer for most of the season. Reamer showed signs that he’s rounding into form with his 18th place finish. Taven Price finished 17th, while Vince Smith and Matthew Wheeland finished 25th and 26th for the Rams.

The team came in second in the poll, with 192 votes, or 9%.

For the CDT’s Athlete of the Week polls this season, we will take nominations from all six county athletic departments for athlete of the week. Voting for this poll ended Sunday. As a reminder, the poll is not scientific and just for fun. In fact, we invite you to vote as many times as you want. Look for future polls at CentreDaily.com.
