Results: Penns Valley football player named Centre Daily Times athlete of the week

A Penns Valley football player was selected by readers of CentreDaily.com as the athlete of the week for Oct. 30-Nov. 5.

John Meyer had 7,237 votes in the poll, or 61%. Penns Valley football took its only lead of the District 6 Class AA quarterfinal matchup with Richland when Meyer returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. Meyer led the Rams this season in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns while also returning a punt for a touchdown on the year.

Here were the other nominees for athlete of the week:

Lilly Smith, Penns Valley girls’ cross country: Cross country’s state championships took place Nov. 4 and Lilly Smith finished just outside the top third of the field. The Penns Valley sophomore finished 89th at the Parkview Cross Country Course in Hershey, one week after finishing 10th in districts to qualify for the race.

Leah Bryan, Bald Eagle volleyball: Bald Eagle volleyball knocked off Hollidaysburg to capture the District 6 Class AAA volleyball title, with Leah Bryan helping lead the effort for the Eagles. She finished with a team high 12 kills in the final, while earning 10 more in the semifinals against Bellefonte.

Luke Torbic, State College boys’ soccer: State High earned three postseason wins over Central Mountain, Brashear and Erie, with goalkeeper Luke Torbic having a big impact. He allowed only one goal over the three matches. He came in second in the poll, with 3,842 votes, or 32%.

Sarah Tate, State College volleyball: State College earned a place in states thanks to a couple of wins over Mifflin County, with Sarah Tate tallying 21 kills over the two victories. She and the Little Lions will host Canon-McMillan in the state playoffs.

For the CDT’s Athlete of the Week polls this season, we will take nominations from all six county athletic departments for athlete of the week. Voting for this poll ended Sunday. As a reminder, the poll is not scientific and just for fun. In fact, we invite you to vote as many times as you want. Look for future polls at CentreDaily.com.
