Poll results: Penns Valley cross country athletes named athletes of the week for Sept. 16-22
A pair of Penns Valley cross country runners are the Centre County athletes of the week for Sept. 16-22, according to readers of CentreDaily.com.
Penns Valley cross country’s Benni Murro and Leire Landeras-Ruiz were nominated together after finishing 79th and 111th, respectively, at the PIAA Foundation Invitational on Sept. 21 in Hershey, representing the Rams well. Landeras-Ruiz and Murro are both exchange students at the school — Landeras-Ruiz is from Spain and Murro is from Italy.
In a poll with more than 24,000 votes, Murro and Landeras-Ruiz had 39% of the vote (9,614 votes).
Below is a look at the other nominees, which were submitted by school athletic directors:
Taven Price, Penns Valley boys cross country: Penns Valley cross country took park in the PIAA Foundation Cross Country Invitational, and Taven Price finished 54th in the event for the Rams.
Price came in second place in the poll, with 8,652 votes.
Alivia Bizzarri, Philipsburg-Osceola girls soccer: Philipsburg-Osceola girls soccer’s Alivia Bizzarri has been a key contributor for the program this season, including earning starts in all seven of the team’s matches. She has stood out as a defender and as the team’s captain.
Kaven Smith-Kirk, Bellefonte football: Bellefonte football’s Kaven Smith-Kirk ran for just under 100 yards for the Raiders during the nominating week, finishing with 16 carries for 96 yards and a touchdown. The sophomore is averaging 4.5 yards per carry and is the second leading rusher on the team.
Aubrey Schreppel, Bellefonte volleyball: Bellefonte volleyball had two conference matches against Philipsburg-Osceola and Clearfield, and Aubrey Schreppel shined for the Raiders. She had 34 assists, 13 digs, eight kills, four aces and a block across the two matches. She’s first in the conference in assists and fifth in hitting percentage.
