Poll results: State College cross country runners named athletes of the week for Oct. 7-13
State College cross country athletes are the Centre County athletes of the week for Oct. 7-13, according to readers of CentreDaily.com.
Isaac Opperman and Devon Jackson tied for first-place in the poll, with four votes each. State High’s Isaac Opperman won the Mid Penn conference cross country championship, finishing a fraction of a second ahead of Mifflin County’s Carter Smith. Opperman ran the race in 15:34.893 and helped the boys team defend its Mid Penn championship at Big Spring High School.
State College’s Devon Jackson finished in second place at the Mid Penn conference cross country championships, falling behind the champion by only .024 seconds with a time of 18:39.369. Jackson led the way for the girls cross country team as it won its 10th straight Mid Penn title, with five of the team’s runners finishing in the top 23.
Below is a look at the other nominees, which were submitted by school athletic directors:
Lily Warlow, Philipsburg-Osceola girls soccer: Philipsburg-Osceola’s Lily Warlow notched two goals for the girls soccer team against Moshannon Valley during the nominating week, helping the team to a victory.
Sam McDonald, Philipsburg-Osceola football: Philipsburg-Osceola’s Sam McDonald had a big game to help lead his team to a 44-14 win over Westmont Hilltop on Oct. 11. McDonald was effective as a runner and a receiver, carrying the ball seven times for 134 yards and two touchdowns and hauling in three receptions for 88 yards and two more touchdowns.
McDonald came in second place in the poll.
