A former State College standout heard his name called Monday afternoon in the 2023 MLB Draft.

Virginia Tech’s Jack Hurley was selected in the third round by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 80th overall pick.

Hurley batted .320 this season for the Hokies, had an on-base percentage of .414 and slugged .713 with 17 home runs leading the team in the latter two categories among hitters who received regular playing time.

ESPN draft analyst Kiley McDaniel wrote that Hurley has “considerable upside” if things work out for him at the plate.

“If he hits, there’s considerable upside,” McDaniel wrote in his top 300 prospect rankings, “he’s a plus runner, above average defender in center field, and has a feel for getting to his above average power in games.”
