State College Spikes rained out at Mahoning Valley

The State College Spikes lost a chance to gain ground in the New York-Penn League’s playoff chase Saturday.

The Spikes’ game at Mahoning Valley was rained out and will not be made up. It means the Spikes will remain 2  1/2 games behind the Scrappers in the Pinckney Division with five games left in the regular season.

Entering Saturday’s games, State College also was two games behind Hudson Valley, and one behind Aberdeen, for the league’s lone wild card spot.

The Spikes return home to play the rest of their regular-season schedule at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, starting a three-game series with the Auburn Doubledays at 6:05 p.m. Sunday. State College’s Daniel Castano (8-3, 2.82 ERA), Saturday’s scheduled starting pitcher, will be on the hill Sunday. The Doubledays have not announced their starter.
