The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation will give out $10,000 in scholarships this summer to high school graduates in each of the team’s markets, the State College Spikes announced in a press release Tuesday.
Students who are graduating from a local high school and going to a two- or four-year college, vocational school or technical education school are eligible for the scholarship. The winner will be decided by academic performance, volunteer experience, extracurricular activities and the effect “minor league baseball and the Spikes have had on their lives.”
Students must apply to the Spikes, and the winner will advance to the league-wide competition, which will include 14 finalists from each league market. League representatives will choose three winners to receive a $2,500 scholarship. A $250 book award will be given to the other finalists.
The application is available on the Spikes’ website and at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The deadline is June 1.
