Ready to cast a line? Here’s when Centre County waterways will be stocked with trout
Millions of trout will be stocked in Pennsylvania rivers and streams this year, and the state Fish and Boat Commission has released the details.
The 2023 adult trout stocking schedule is available on the commission’s website, fishandboat.com, and on the FishBoatPA app. The schedule can be searched by county and shows where volunteers should meet, when stocking will occur in each waterway and which species of trout will be stocked at the location.
Stocking begins the week of Feb. 21 ahead of the April 1 statewide opening day to the season. In Centre County, stocking starts in March, A statewide Mentored Youth Trout Day will be held March 25.
“While many anglers still have their rods and tackle boxes stored away for the winter, the release of our trout stocking schedule is always highly anticipated and is a reminder that spring fishing opportunities are just around the corner,” Brian Wisner, director of the commission’s Bureau of Hatcheries, said in a press release. “This schedule is the blueprint we use as we build a world-class stocked trout fishery in all corners of the Commonwealth over the next several weeks.”
The commission plans to stock 3.2 million adult trout this year: about 2.3 million rainbow trout, 707,000 brown trout, 168,000 brook trout and 14,000 golden rainbow trout. Volunteers can help place the trout, whether conservation groups, schools or walk-ups.
Anglers 16 and older are required to have a fishing license and trout permit. Fishing licenses, launch permits and boat registration renewals can be purchased online at www.fishandboat.com or the FishBoatPA app, or in person at a license issuing agent.
