Fire consumes tractor-trailer cab on I-80

A tractor-trailer truck appeared to be a total loss Wednesday evening after a fire consumed the vehicle along Interstate 80.

Bellefonte fire departments and mutual aid units responded to the fire, Undine Fire Company said via Facebook. The fire call went out to Undine, Logan, Pleasant Gap, Walker and Howard fire companies at 5:07 p.m., according to Centre County fire wire, dispatching the companies to the eastbound lanes of the interstate.

The fire occurred at the 161.4 mile-marker in Marion Township, Undine said, saying “Units arrived to find a working fire, and fire extending to the road side vegetation.”

PennDOT spokesperson Marla Fannin said the road was closed between 5:30 and 6 p.m. One lane was opened until both lanes could finally be reopened at about 11:10 p.m.

Eastbound traffic was backed up for several miles during the fire and cleanup, and smoke from the blaze could be seen from State College.

No injuries were reported.

An official cause of the fire was not yet available as of midday Thursday.
