Man, 18, dies from injuries suffered in crash
An 18-year-old Millheim man died from injuries he suffered in a Sunday crash.
Daniel K. Beiler, Jr. died at Geisinger Danville Hospital a day after the crash, according to Montour County Deputy Coroner Scott Lynn.
Beiler Jr. was operating an horse and buggy at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday on Penns Valley Road near Paradise Road in Penn Township, according to state police at Rockview. A Subaru Outback driven by Theadore Horman rear-ended the horse and buggy, which killed the horse at the scene, caused fatal injuries to Beiler Jr. and injured a female passenger of the buggy.
Beiler Jr. and his passenger were ejected from the buggy and were taken by helicopter to the hospital. He was put on life support, but died Monday morning, according to Lynn. The passenger suffered a fractured left femur, internal injuries and a serious head injury.
State troopers detected an odor of marijuana at the scene and also discovered marijuana and a smoking device in the vehicle, according to an affidavit of probable cause. Horman allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana earlier in the day, and two sobriety tests indicated impairment.
Horman, 26, of Centre Hall, was taken to the hospital for a blood draw. Police said charges were filed against him for aggravated assault while driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance and driving under the influence.
No additional charges have been filed.
