Tornado confirmed in Centre County

The National Weather Service in State College confirmed Tuesday evening that a tornado did touch down in Centre County Monday.

According to NWS, the tornado first touched down at about 6:44 p.m. near a wooden pallet factory on the outskirts of Rebersburg, then moved rapidly to the northeast through town, before lifting just northeast of Rebersburg. The tornado stayed on the ground for one minute.

Damage was reported to several dozen homes, and several dozen trees were uprooted or snapped in the storm’s approximately 1-mile long path. A utility pole was also snapped.

One injury was reported, as a man was trapped under his shed after it collapsed Monday off Chestnut Street. He was hospitalized in Geisinger Danville’s trauma center and is expected to recover.

The maximum winds were estimated near 110 mph, according to NWS.

The National Weather Service also confirmed two EF1 tornadoes in northern Elk County, and another just east of Custer City in McKean County.
