A State College teen was shot Friday night. Police believe it was an intentional attack
A 13-year-old was shot in the face with an air gun Friday night.
Police said a 14-year-old State College student is responsible for pulling the trigger and causing injuries to his peer’s eye and face.
Authorities believe the incident was an intentional attack related to a prior dispute between the teenagers.
The student who was shot was initially taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center and subsequently taken to Danville Medical Center due to the severity of his injuries. His condition is not yet known.
“I am extremely concerned for the victim and his family and deeply saddened by this tragic event,” State College Area School District Superintendent Bob O’Donnell said in an email to parents.
“Right now, our focus as a district is on our students and their families and our steps to move forward to support them. This tragedy occurred despite having several police officers in close proximity. Therefore, we will collaborate with the State College police department to conduct a review of safety protocol at district events.”
Authorities have not released the names of the shooter or the injured teenager.
State College police responded to the incident on the 200 block of South Fraser Street near the post office, which is located on the same block as the school district’s football field where a game was being played. The 14-year-old was taken into custody without incident and was placed at the Central Counties Youth Detention Center after witnesses identified him as the shooter.
Police have filed a juvenile allegation against the 14-year-old for aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.
O’Donnell said the district will have an update Sunday “regarding resources that will be in place across the district for Monday morning.”
The school has asked for privacy for the injured teenager and his family.
