Everything you missed in high school sports — and isn’t elsewhere in the CDT — from Tuesday:
Boys’ cross country
No. 1 Penns Valley sweeps Bellefonte, Clearfield
BELLEFONTE Centre County is slowly becoming a mecca for the state’s cross country runners.
For the past two seasons, St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy girls’ team has won PIAA Class A titles. And, as of Tuesday, the Penns Valley boys are ranked No. 1 in Class A and No. 9 overall in the state. The Rams took that rank and ran with it in a sweep of Bellefonte (20-24) and Clearfield (15-46) on Tuesday.
“It’s nice we are recognized,” Penns Valley coach Terry Glunt said. “The kids have worked hard.”
The Rams didn’t have the top finisher in the tri-meet but took the next six spots. Chris and Brendan Colwell paced their team with a second- and third-place finish, respectively. Chris’ time was seven seconds behind the winner and Brendan finished in 18 minutes, 3 seconds.
Bellefonte, who lost to Clearfield 23-38, had the winner in Brett Pope. Pope set a new course record with a time of 17:22.
Colton Sands (fourth, 18:15), Mark Bierly (fifth, 18:33), Sammy Gray (sixth, 19:15) and Charlie Romig (seventh, 19:18) finished out the top 7 for Penns Valley.
P-O, BEA swept by Tyrone
TYRONE Philipsburg-Osceola and Bald Eagle Area combined to get three of the top-10 spots as Tyrone topped both schools 17-30 and 15-50, respectively.
The Mounties topped the Eagles 15-50 in their matchup.
P-O’s Zach Myers was the highest finisher for the county in fourth place with a time of 21:06. BEA’s Luke Wilson (eighth, 23:14) and Caleb Spackman (10th, 24:12) were in the top 10.
Little Lions top tri-meet
LEWISTOWN Owen Isham led a group of six State College runners in the top 10 of a tri-meet, where the Little Lions topped Mifflin County (25-34) and Central Dauphin (15-48).
“This was an outstanding effort from this team today,” State College coach Dave Felice said. “The team really stepped up in a big way to win this race against an excellent Mifflin County team.”
Isham finished second with a time of 17:07. Mifflin County’s Brayden Harris was the overall winner by four seconds.
Other Little Lions runners in the top 10 included Eric Boethius (fourth, 17:12), Bennett Norton (fifth, 17:43), Joe Messner (sixth, 17:48), Sam Horn (eighth, 18:05) and David Gluckman (ninth, 18:06).
Girls’ cross country
Lady Mounties pick up 2 wins
TYRONE Philipsburg-Osecola had five funners in the top 10 to top Tyrone (19-36) and Bald Eagle Area (22-33) in a tri-meet.
The Lady Mounties’ Samantha Baney was the top individual with a time of 25:29. Baney edged out the Lady Eagles’ Katlynn Taylor by 1/2 second.
Megan Kosut (third, 27:45), Natalie Shaw (sixth, 29:49), Hannah Wildman (seventh, 30:03) and Kyra James (ninth, 31:01) were in the top 10 for P-O.
BEA was edged by the Lady Golden Eagles 26-30. Joining Taylor in the top 10 were Madisyn McAfee (fourth, 28:23) and Raelyn McGonigal (10th, 31:37).
Penns Valleys stays perfect in conference play
BELLEFONTE Penns Valley captured three of the top-5 spots and five of the top 10 in a sweep of Clearfield (22-33) and Bellefonte (18-39).
Karly Smith, Kelsey Hull and Catherine Bierlein finished second, third and fourth, respectively, for the Lady Rams. Clearfield’s Abby Labore was the winner in a time of 22:21.
Smith finished in a time of 22:34, Hull was seven seconds behind and Bierlein was just over one minute. Alexis Witherite (seventh, 24:24) and Alicia Yoder (ninth, 24:54) also were in the top 10 for Penns Valley.
Bellefonte, which fell to Clearfield 28-29, had Amber Shirey (fifth, 24:04) and Amaya Rothrock (eighth, 24:29) in the top 10.
Kane paces State College to 2 wins
LEWISTOWN Kileigh Kane was the highest finisher for State College in a tri-meet, which it topped Mifflin County (20-42) and Central Dauphin (19-40).
Kane finished 16 seconds off the pace to come in second. Mifflin County’s Joy Galbraith won the race with a time of 20:34.
Elle Haushalter (fourth), Lizzie Gilpatrick (fifth), Cailin Saylor (sixth), Gabbi Bock (seventh) and Anna Kwasnica (10th) all joined Kane in the top 10.
Girls’ soccer
Porter leads State College to win
CARLISLE Payton Porter recorded two goals and an assist on another to lead State College over Carlisle 6-3 in Mid Penn play.
Porter’s goals came back-to-back for the Lady Little Lions in the first half — 13 minutes apart.
Myca Ingram also had two goals for State College. Erica Feese and Ellen Lee had the other tallies, and Feese and Esther Seeland had assists in the win.
Carlisle’s Liz Weis netted a hat trick.
Marsh propels Grace Prep in win over CCCA
STATE COLLEGE Clare Marsh had the first goal of the night for Grace Prep but assisted on three other scores in a 6-1 win over Centre County Christian Academy.
Marsh’s goal came early in the game at the third minute. Marsh’s assists came on goals by Tenaye Strauss, Abigail Galliano and Sarah Watkins. Watkins and Strauss collected their first scores of the year.
Abigael Fisher and Maddie DeNezza had the other scores for the Lady Storm.
Ashley Kerstetter had the lone goal for the Lady Bulldogs.
Montminy’s big night hands Lady Rams win
SPRING MILLS Hannah Montminy had a hat trick 12 minutes into the game for Penns Valley in a 7-1 rout of Moshannon Valley.
Montminy added two other goals in the second half to finish with five goals on the night. She also had an assist.
Sydney Riegel and Keira Whitman had the other two goals for the Lady Rams. Abby Martin collected two assists and Katie Martell, Leah Beben, Maria Lovallo and Whitman each had one assist for Penns Valley.
Boys’ soccer
Grace Prep tops CCCA in county battle
STATE COLLEGE Grace Prep scored a goal in two minutes and had three in the first half of a 5-2 win over Centre County Christian Academy.
Josh Mikhail got it started in the second minute. He had another score in the 20th minute on a penalty kick. Joe Wheeler had the other first-half goal for the Storm.
Koa Nguyen and Jake Cannizzario had the other goals for Grace Prep.
Hayden Walker tallied both of the Bulldogs’ scores. Goalkeeper Chad Weaver had 15 saves for CCCA.
Little Lions blank Carlisle
STATE COLLEGE The Little Lions tallied one goal in each half to shut out Carlisle 2-0.
Fernando del Castillo had the first goal of the night in the 20th minute. Nkosi Govere recorded an assist on del Castillo’s goal.
Thomas Sowers found the back of the net in the 55th minute as State College outshot the Thundering Herd 9-2.
PV, Tyrone play to tie
TYRONE Penns Valley and Tyrone were evenly matched all night, as the two played to a 1-1 tie.
Tyrone’s Corey Johnston scored at the 56-minute mark, but the Rams’ Sam Kupp responded with a goal at the 74-minute mark.
Penns Valley’s Jared Kines made nine saves, while Tyrone’s Isaac Woomer made eight.
Girls’ volleyball
Bellefonte coasts past Clearfield
CLEARFIELD Bellefonte earned its second win in two nights with a sweep of Clearfield, 25-10, 25-17, 25-16.
Anna Rutecki had 17 kills to lead the Lady Red Raiders, who also got seven kills from Phoebe Rowand. Rutecki also had four aces.
Other stat leaders for Bellefonte (3-4) include Shaelah Pepperman (21 assists) and Lauren Yeager (19 digs).
BEA sweeps Central
MARTINSBURG Bald Eagle Area’s Grace Hugar had 14 kills while teammate Alyson Onder added 15 digs in the Lady Eagles’ sweep over Central.
BEA won 25-12, 25-16, 25-15.
Madison Rockey and Elita Brown had three aces apiece in the winning effort.
Lady Little Lions top Lady Colts
STATE COLLEGE Anjelica Rubin and Jess Irwin had three aces apiece to lead State College over Cedar Cliff, 25-20, 25-12, 25-18.
Irwin led the Lady Little Lions with 10 kills. Leah Henderson had 17 assists and 12 digs to pace State College.
Erin Lutz added 11 digs for the Lady Little Lions on the defensive end.
Eckberg leads P-O to win
PHILIPSBURG The Lady Mounties’ Jadyn Eckberg finished with a dozen aces and 20 service points as Philipsburg-Osceola cruised to a 25-21, 25-16, 25-7 victory over Tyrone.
Eckberg also had six digs, while Morgan Thompson chipped in eight kills.
P-O will next take on Bellefonte on Wednesday.
PV beats Huntingdon in 4
HUNTINGDON Emma Butler paced the Lady Rams with 11 kills and five aces as her team overcame a four-set match 25-23, 25-9, 19-25, 25-22.
Brook Emel had five aces and Peyton Homan added five blocks in the victory.
Penns Valley will next take on Bald Eagle Area on Wednesday.
Girls’ tennis
Lady Little Lions cruise
STATE COLLEGE The Lady Little Lions swept Lower Dauphin 5-0, as they didn’t drop a singles set in the team victory.
State College’s Kelly Vanden, Catelyn Janac and Amelia Dodoo all claimed wins after dropping no more than three games in each set.
The doubles pairs of Jasmine Cao-Keya Ahrestani and Saoirse Hopp-Leah Patzkowski also came out with close victories.
