Penns Valley clinches Mountain League crown

MARTINSBURG The Penns Valley boys’ cross country team clinched the Mountain League title Tuesday after taking the top-4 spots in a double meet with Central and Tyrone.

The Rams swept their opponents 15-50 and 17-43, respectively, to claim their fourth-consecutive league crown.

“I’m proud of all the guys for running strong,” Penns Valley coach Terry Glunt said. “Chris Colwell set the Central course record, and Mark Bierly ran strong, breaking his old personal record by eight seconds.”

Colwell was the overall winner with a time of 16 minutes, 25 seconds, which was also a new personal record. He was followed by Bierly’s 16:46, Brendon Colwell’s 16:54 and Colton Sands’ 17:04.

The four Rams’ runners outpaced the Eagles’ dynamic duo of Joe and Zach Kohler, who finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

“Tyrone has two really great runners in the Kohler boys,” Glunt said. “For our guys to beat them, it was amazing.”

Samuel Gray, Charles Romig and Haden Stam also finished in the top 10 for Penns Valley.

Red Raiders top Mounties

PHILIPSBURG Bellefonte took the top-3 spots to beat Philipsburg-Osceola 17-43.

The Red Raiders’ Brett Pope paced the field with a time of 17:06. His time was nearly two minutes faster than the two teammates who followed him, in Austin Melius and Cole Hovis.

The Mounties’ Zach Myers was P-O’s highest finisher in fourth with a time of 19:59.

State College dominates Hollidaysburg

STATE COLLEGE Mitchell Etter led a pack of State College runners to the finish line in a 15-50 win over Hollidaysburg.

The Little Lions were dominant, as they took all top-10 spots in the meet. Etter finished with a time of 17:33.

Owen Isham, Erik Boethius, Joe Messner and Ari Gluckman were all within 30 seconds of Etter for top-5 finishes.

Bellefonte sweeps top 3

PHILIPSBURG Amber Shirey, Amya Rothrock and Sadie Belsky finished 1-2-3 to lead Bellefonte over Philipsburg-Osceola 20-36.

Shirey’s finished with a time of 21:49 with Belsky finishing a minute behind. Rothrock came across the line in 22:32.

The Lady Mounties’ Sam Bainey paced her team with a fourth place finish at 24:02.

Lady Rams win Mt. League title

MARTINSBURG Karly Smith was the top overall finisher to lead Penns Valley in a sweep of Central (15-50) and Tyrone (15-50).

Smith finished with a time of 20:55 for the Lady Rams, who took the top five spots en route to the Mountain League title.

Kelsey Hull (21:43), Catherine Bierlein (22:36), Alex Witherite (23:03) and Alicia Yoder (23:33) rounded out the top five for Penns Valley.

State College cruise to victory

STATE COLLEGE Kileigh Kane led the way for seven State College runners to finish the line in a 15-50 win over Hollidaysburg.

Kane had a time of 20:22. Emma Simon was six seconds off of Kane’s pace.

Cailin Saylor, Elle Haushalter, Lizzie Gilpatrick, Gabbi Bock and Mihret Strauss rounded out the top runners for the Lady Little Lions (5-2).

Bald Eagle Area rolls to win

WINGATE Madison Rockey made her presence felt both defensively and offensively for Bald Eagle Area in a 3-0 sweep of Tyrone.

Rockey handed out 26 assists and led the team with five blocks in the 25-9, 25-11, 25-12 victory.

Grace Hugar finished the game with 12 kills, Alyson Onder picked up 11 digs, and Hannah Zimmerman had four aces from the service line for the Lady Eagles.

Lady Little Lions sweep Lady Huskies

LEWISTOWN State College cruised to a sweep (25-10, 25-11, 25-15) over Mifflin County after several impressive performances.

Jess Irwin paced the Lady Little Lions in kills (12), while Leah Henderson had the most assists (31), and Katie Finlan led the team in digs (14). Katie Lachendro also chipped in 11 kills in the winning effort.

State College, which is 7-2, will next take on Altoona on Wednesday.

P-O unable to hold off Huntingdon

PHILIPSBURG After winning the first two sets, Philipsburg-Osceola was in prime position to earn another sweep — but Huntingdon had other ideas.

Huntingdon rallied to take the match 3-2 (14-25, 12-25, 26-24, 25-21, 15-12).

Morgan Thompson led the Lady Mounties with 13 kills and 19 digs. Rachel Simpson (21) and Hannah Thompson (20) posted 20-plus assists each for P-O.

The Lady Mounties also got double-digit kills from Jadyn Eckberg (10) and Molly Maguire (10).

Lady Rams sweep Lady Bison

SPRING MILLS Emma Butler had nine kills and five aces to lead Penns Valley to a 25-15, 25-16, 25-15 win over Clearfield.

Lexi Culver chipped in six kills, and Morgan Kerstetter had nine digs for the Lady Rams.

BEA shuts out P-O

WINGATE Bald Eagle Area had seven different players score a goal in a shutout of Philipsburg-Osecola 7-0.

Madison Jones recorded the only goal of the first half in the 21st minute.

Kiersten Walker, Zoey McHenry, Emily Shiels, Addison Proctor, Georgia Cingle and Emma Murgas all netted goals in the second half for the Lady Eagles, which held a 20-5 shot advantage.

PV slips past Bellefonte

BELLEFONTE Penns Valley’s Hannah Montminy scored off a free kick in the first half, as that proved to be the only score in the Lady Rams’ 1-0 victory over the Lady Red Raiders.

Bellefonte outshot PV by a 6-to-3 margin. Katie Martell made six saves in the winning effort.

BEA blows out opponent

BELLEVILLE No Eagle may have scored a hat trick, but plenty scored two goals apiece as Bald Eagle Area dominated Belleville Mennonite by a 10-0 score.

Jacob Michael, Seth Koleno and Trent Donley each found the back of the net twice in the win. Garrett Giedroc and Garrett Barnhart each had three assists apiece.

Goalie Hunter Etters secured the shutout with four saves.

BEA boasts a 10-2 record now and will next face Central at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Little Lions top Eagles

MECHANICSBURG State College trailed midway through the first half — but responded for a 2-1 win over Cumberland Valley.

“After a week off, we weren’t as sharp as usual for the first 20 minutes,” Little Lions coach Danny Orton said. “We kept fighting and dug in for that period. We’re all so proud of this team. I’m challenging them to continue to push every day.”

Fernando del Castillo recorded the Little Lions’ first goal in the 67th minute to tie the game. Zach Pepper scored seven minutes later for the eventual game-winner.

Zach Price had assists on both the State College’s goals.

Mercersburg beats State College

MERCERSBURG With districts approaching Wednesday, Mercersburg and State College played quite a few extra matches Tuesday as the Lady Little Lions fell 14-1.

State College’s Kelly Vanden defeated Mercersburg’s Alex Zhukova 3-6, 6-1 (10-6) to get her team’s lone win. Ten singles matches and five doubles matches were played.
