Local Asian bakery moving to larger space in downtown State College. Here’s what to expect

A local Asian bakery plans to open a new space in downtown State College this summer.

Chew Chew Bun Asian Bakery will soon open a new shop at 115 E. Beaver Ave. According to its website, the bakery plans to open its doors by the end of August.

The bakery is setting up in the former home of Crust & Crumb Cafe, which closed in May after nearly two years in business. Chew Chew Bun is relocating to the larger downtown space after closing its Nittany Mall location, which opened in 2019.

Chew Chew Bun specializes in creating Taiwanese-inspired pastries, including egg tarts and both sweet and savory buns. Some of its best sellers include pork sung buns, melon buns and garlic cheese pull buns.

The bakery’s full menu is available on its website, which also facilitates online ordering and home deliveries. Chew Chew Bun says it is not currently accepting orders.

Chew Chew Bun’s owner, Skye Chang, moved to the United States alongside his family and previously studied mathematics at Penn State. He returned to the area more than a decade later to open an Asian bakery in State College, filling a need he saw in the community.

“Initially, when we started in 2019, we didn’t really look for a store(front). We weren’t sure what the market in State College (would be),” Chang told the Centre Daily Times last year. “I know there are a lot of Asian communities, but my goal is to not just introduce the Asian bakery to Asian communities. I also want to let the local communities learn different kinds of cuisines and what the history of it is.”

Check in with the bakery’s website, chewchewbun.com, or Facebook page, facebook.com/chewchewbun/, for more updates on its new downtown location.
