A Nittany Mall store is expected to close its doors after decades in business.

Claire’s, the chain retailer specializing in jewelry, fashion accessories and piercings, is shuttering its store located inside the mall. The move comes as Claire’s prepares to close some stores around the country and begin Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, though State College’s store did not appear on a recently published list of stores expected to close.

For now, it’s unclear exactly when the Nittany Mall’s store will close. A Claire’s employee declined to answer questions from the Centre Daily Times regarding the planned closure, which was evident from signs posted throughout the store.

The company’s public relations department did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday afternoon.

Before closing, the Nittany Mall location is running a wide range of sales and specials to help liquidate its inventory. Signs posted in the store’s windows say Claire’s is offering between 50% and 70% off its entire inventory. Another deal will pair a free ear piercing with the purchase of any starter kit, which is discounted by 40%.

Claire’s is not accepting payments using checks during its closing sales, signs inside the store say. All sales are final and ineligible for returns.

Those interested in the store’s fixtures and equipment can fill out a form with their contact information. The sign-up sheets indicate Claire’s is willing to sell a wide collection of its in-store assets, ranging from office furniture and appliances to electronics and tools.

Claire’s is the latest store to close as the Nittany Mall prepares for a major shake-up with the planned 2026 opening of the $120 million Happy Valley Casino. Shoe Dept. Encore, another longtime Nittany Mall store, moved to a new storefront along Benner Pike in March.
