Downtown State College’s newest diner is now open inside an iconic property.

Bubba’s Eggs, Steaks & Shakes launched with a soft opening Monday at 131 S. Garner St., the longtime home of Baby’s Burgers and Shakes. Work to open in State College moved quickly after the new diner’s owners announced plans for the space just a few weeks ago.

The soft opening coincided with the first official look at the diner’s menu, which is now available on Bubba’s Facebook page. The restaurant’s breakfast menu feature a wide range of platters, omelets, sandwiches and pancakes, waffles and French toast, while lunch and dinner options include burgers, hot dogs, cheesesteaks, chicken tender baskets, salads and other sandwiches.

Specialty items on the menus include chicken and waffles, salted caramel mocha pancakes and the “Big Porky” — a breakfast sandwich with bacon, sausage, ham and hash browns piled atop three over-medium eggs and sandwiched between two slices of French toast. Some breakfast platters even have football-themed names, including the $16.50 kickoff combo that comes with two eggs, breakfast meat, potatoes and toast alongside a pair of pancakes, two slices of French toast or a waffle.

Though more breakfast options are available in the morning, Bubba’s lunch and dinner menu still includes basic breakfast platters as well as pancakes, French toast and waffles.

Omelets, which come with a choice of potatoes and toast, start at $10, while 6-ounce burgers are served with a side of fries starting at $14. Quarter-pound hot dogs, also served with fries, start at $3.75. Guests hoping to try a wide range of the menu can even order a single pancake for $3 or two eggs and breakfast meat for $6.50.

Bubba’s arrives in State College following months of work from the team behind the Daily Grind in Altoona, which closed in September after opening 2022. It served specialty coffees and breakfast favorites like French toast and waffles.

The Garner Street location became available in July following the closure of Oeuf Boeuf et Bacon, a French-inspired diner from award-winning chef Gillian Clark. The 1950s-themed Baby’s Burgers and Shakes opened there in 1987 and shut its doors for good during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bubba’s will start by operating from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the soft opening period. Check out its newly created Facebook page for updates as its soft opening continues this week.
