Two State College locations for a national fast-food chain have closed.

Subway sandwich shops at 1700 S. Atherton St. and 2790 W. College Ave. are closed, according to the chain’s online directory for State College-area stores. Both locations are listed as “closed” with no hours available for any day of the week.

Neither shop immediately responded to a request for comment from the Centre Daily Times when contacted in early December regarding their potential closures. Signs indicating closures have been posted on doors at each location.

Though the South Atherton Street shop’s phone number has been disconnected, the West College Avenue shop’s phone rang repeatedly with no answer on Friday.

The apparent closures leave five Subway shops operating in State College. Customers can find Subways at both Walmarts in town (1665 N. Atherton St. and 373 Benner Pike), 456 E. College Ave., 100 S. Burrowes St. and Pegula Ice Arena on Penn State’s campus.

Additional Centre County Subways are available in Milesburg and Philipsburg.

Each of the more than 40,000 Subway locations operating worldwide is owned and operated independently, the chain says on its website.

Subway’s closures mark some the latest shuttered restaurants in the State College area, including the South Atherton Street IHOP. Other restaurants — including Sizzling Bites Halal Grill and a new Persian restaurant — plan to open in the coming months.
