A new cafe hopes to bring something new to diners in Pleasant Gap.

Warren’s Kitchen recently opened at 113 E. College Ave. inside the former home of The Cakeshop by Tati’s brick-and-mortar store. The new cafe serves “quick and easy” breakfast and lunch seven days a week, according to owner Dustin McCartin.

The restaurant’s menu includes breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos, egg platters, pancakes and even a breakfast smash burger. Any breakfast item can be upgraded to a meal for $3 fee, pairing entrées with a medium-sized coffee and a hash brown or side of fruit.

Those dining for lunch can chow down on burgers, wraps, cheesesteaks, melts, quesadillas and more, all served with a bag of chips. Children’s meals and other snacks are up for grabs, too.

Warren’s Kitchen offers a wide range of coffees and teas, including espressos, cappuccinos and specialty lattes and cold brews. All coffee served at the cafe is roasted at the nearby Cafe Lemont and ground on-site each day.

McCartin, a longtime restaurant manager, said he opened the cafe to bring something new to the area. It also serves as an expansion of his catering business, which currently serves 10 Penn State fraternity chapters. Both businesses are named after his grandfather.

“It’s definitely been a transition,” McCartin said. “It’s not necessarily what we grew up doing, but we’re very comfortable with the food part. It’s the coffee that we’re still learning and trying to improve.”

McCartin, who lives just blocks away from the Pleasant Gap cafe, took over the space a few months after the Cakeshop by Tati closed its brick-and-mortar store. He’s a longtime friend and former colleague of Derek Polay, who still runs the wholesale bakery business alongside his eponymous wife.

Longtime fans who miss the Cakeshop’s pastries can still find its plain and chocolate croissants at Warren’s Kitchen. The cafe also serves a few stuffed cookies and desserts from Inside Out Cookie.

After launching with a soft opening on Feb. 12, McCartin says he’s proud to bring another dining option to Pleasant Gap, where dining options are a bit more limited than in State College or Bellefonte.

“All the feedback so far has been great,” McCartin said. “People seem really happy just to have something out this way that’s quick and easy for breakfast or lunch in a more casual environment.”

“We’re definitely excited to offer them something a little different,” he continued. “A lot of places out here might serve some more old-school, rural-type food. Some of our stuff is a little more from the State College restaurant scene.”

Warren’s Kitchen is open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. McCartin said those hours may change in a few months after his team evaluates the cafe’s first few months in business.
