A downtown State College diner has closed its doors after roughly six months in business.

Bubba’s Eggs, Steaks & Shakes has ceased operations at 131 S. Garner St. after opening inside the iconic downtown property in late October. The restaurant served a wide-ranging menu featuring burgers, milkshakes and other diner favorites.

“This was not an easy decision,” the diner’s team wrote on Facebook. “We are incredibly proud of what we built and deeply grateful for the support from our customers, staff and the local community. Serving downtown State College has been a privilege, and we appreciate everyone who chose to spend their time and meals with us.”

Bubba’s cited ongoing staffing challenges as a contributing cause to its closure.

“Despite our best efforts to recruit and retain a reliable team, these challenges have made it increasingly difficult to operate at the level our customers expect and deserve,” the restaurant wrote.

The diner went through many operational changes over its six-month tenure in State College, including student-centered specials and trial runs of late-night hours stretching to 3 a.m.

Bubba’s arrived in State College with the help of the team behind the Daily Grind, a breakfast restaurant and coffee shop in Altoona. It closed last September after opening in 2022.

The property at 131 S. Garner St. became available last year following the closure of Oeuf Boeuf et Bacon, a French-inspired diner from award-winning chef Gillian Clark. The 1950s-themed Baby’s Burgers and Shakes opened there in 1987 and shut its doors for good during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We want to sincerely thank our employees — past and present — for their hard work and dedication, as well as our loyal customers for their continued support,” Bubba’s wrote online. “This is not a goodbye without gratitude. We are thankful for the memories, relationships and experience that came from being part of this community.”
