With Centre County covered in white instead of green on St. Patrick’s Day, local school districts will be closed Tuesday due to a late batch of winter weather.

Bellefonte, State College, Bald Eagle and Penns Valley area school districts will be closed, with Penns Valley operating on a Virtual Instruction Day and Bald Eagle and Bellefonte on a Flexible Instruction Day. The districts had announced a two-hour delay earlier in the morning before switching to a closure. Philipsburg-Osecola Area School District still plans to operate on a two-hour delay.

State College’s school district cited poor road conditions in its decision to delay and then close. District offices will still open two hours late and a decision about after-school activities will be made later Tuesday, SCASD wrote in an email to families.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the area through 8 a.m. Tuesday. In addition to snow accumulation, gusty winds were also forecast.

The snow comes alongside a cold front that’s expected to start late Monday and last through Wednesday, AccuWeather meteorologist Tom Kines told the CDT Monday. Lows in the teens and 20s are possible, and Tuesday temperatures are not expected to get above freezing.
