Woman who died in Boalsburg shooting identified as investigation continues

The Centre County Coroner’s Office confirmed Friday the woman who died last month in a Boalsburg shooting was 35 years old and formerly from a tiny borough in Clearfield County.

Chelsea Leila Knepp, 35, of Boalsburg and formerly of Grampian, died Dec. 17 in what was reported to be a predawn shooting at a home in the 900 block of Boal Avenue. Investigators have been tight-lipped about the circumstances of the shooting, which remains under investigation.

Knepp was remembered in her obituary last month for her flamboyant personality, someone you always knew was in the room.

“She had a good sense of humor, always first in line for a giggle or two,” her obituary read. “She loved her pets, especially her dog, Tucker, who helped her through many rough times. She also had a love for her chickens whom she liked to visit and spoil.”

Knepp worked in skilled nursing at the Atrium, the health care center at The Village at Penn State. She graduated from the Clearfield County Career & Technology Center with a licensed practical nurse degree.

“She enjoyed caring for the residents she came in contact with and made many friendships with them and their families,” her obituary read.

She is survived by her parents, two brothers, maternal grandparents and several nieces and nephews.

Details about how the shooting occurred have not been released publicly. When asked last month if there was any indication of foul play or if the death was believed to be suspicious, State College police Lt. Bryan Foster would only say it was a shooting investigation. There was no threat to the public, he said.

Results from a Dec. 18 autopsy have not been released. Centre County Chief Deputy Coroner J.D. Kubalak said last month that the coroner’s office would receive them “as soon as possible” to assist with the investigation.

Messages left Friday afternoon with borough police were not immediately returned. The Centre County Coroner’s Office said no additional information was available as of Friday and referred other questions to State College police.

No charges were filed as of Friday evening. Centre County District Attorney Bernie Cantorna declined comment.
