  • A roof fire heavily damaged a Snow Shoe home Monday, displacing a family of three.
  • Electrical work in an upstairs closet likely sparked the fire, officials reported.
  • Mountain Springs Wellness closed indefinitely due to smoke and water damage.

A three-story house in Snow Shoe sustained severe damage during a second-alarm roof fire on Monday night, displacing a family of three and closing a business that operated in the home.

The fire was reported just before 7 p.m., and more than a dozen departments from Centre, Clearfield and Blair counties were dispatched to the blaze in the 800 block of Uzzell Road. About 60 firefighters responded to the fire, with extra being dispatched due to the heat wave that has hit Pennsylvania and much of the East Coast this week.

“That’s actually why we had so many firefighters,” Snow Shoe Fire Company Chief Beau Martin said. “Just brought additional in due to the extreme heat so we were able to rotate a lot of firefighters in.”

The fire was under control around 9 p.m., according to Martin.

Martin said the fire is believed to have started in an upstairs bedroom closet due to electrical work being done, causing “moderate to severe” damage to the home. The family and their pets got out safely and stayed in a camper on Monday night, Martin said.

Mountain Springs Wellness, a wellness center that operates inside the home, is closed indefinitely due to heavy smoke and water damage, according to a Facebook post Tuesday morning.

The fire companies called to assist Snow Shoe included Citizens Hook & Ladder, Pine Glen, Undine, Logan, Pleasant Gap, Howard, Alpha, Columbia, Morris Township, Grassflat and Winburne fire companies. Snow Shoe EMS and Moshannon Valley EMS also responded.

It was the second serious fire that happened Monday in Centre County. In the predawn hours, a Rebersburg home was destroyed by a fast-moving blaze that displaced a family of five.
