If you received a $48 payment in your Venmo from “Doe et al v Mount Nittany Health et al Settlement” in recent days, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a scam. But there’s nothing fishy about it.

The discrepancy may have arisen from the fact that claimants for Mount Nittany Health’s $1.8 million invasion of privacy settlement only needed to provide a phone number to receive their cut.

Representatives for State College-based Mount Nittany and Kroll Settlement Administration, which is distributing the payments, said the form claimants filled out included the option to receive payments via Venmo. The digital payment app only requires a payee to have a user’s phone number.

The claim filing deadline was back in April, and about 74,000 people were eligible for claims stemming from allegations Mount Nittany’s website used tracking software capable of sharing private medical information with advertisers.

Claimants could also opt to receive their portion of the settlement in check form.

It’s okay if you forgot you gave your phone number to Kroll Settlement Administration five months ago. You can accept the $48 and buy yourself a nice dinner.
