This Bellefonte bakery is relocating, and a boutique is taking over its space

After two years of pop-ups and tear downs, By a Thread Boutique has found a permanent home in a space that’s been outgrown by its most recent tenant.

Emily Boone has hosted a series of shopping events at The Cakery in downtown Bellefonte, but now, the boutique owner is “taking over” and “kicking out” Melissa Stitzer, bakery co-owner. In a virtual announcement Saturday, the pair revealed The Cakery is relocating, and By a Thread will be moving into the storefront, located at 135 W. High St.

“I’m going to have a store; I can’t even say the words,” Boone said during a live stream over the weekend. “I’m opening my first boutique, guys. We are thrilled to share this news with all of you. This is such an exciting time for both of us.”

Boone started the boutique two years ago, wanting to create a place that’s “friendly and comfortable, where you always feel welcome and a place where you always find pieces that you will reach for over and over again,” she wrote on the shop’s website.

By a Thread offers a variety of women’s clothing, including dresses, sweaters, tops, pants, skirts, shoes and accessories.

“I wanted to create a place that, like your favorite sweater or pair of jeans, makes you feel comfortable and confident,” she wrote. “In an industry that often tells us who we need to dress like, I want to inspire you to dress like you and embrace your own unique style.”

Since then, Boone has devoted two years of “blood, sweat, tears, laughs, late nights, early mornings, countless pop-ups, loading our vehicles to the brim, set-ups and tear downs” to the boutique. And now, she’s settling into the space Stitzer opened last year.

“It’s so cool to see Melissa get her start in this store and to get to the point where she’s growing out of it,” Boone said. “It’s big enough for me to come in here.”

But Stitzer’s sweets and treats won’t be going far.

“We are moving up and getting a bigger spot with a kitchen and a shop,” she said. “That detail will come soon. We are staying in downtown Bellefonte, though.”

The Cakery will remain closed for the month of October as the move is finalized, but variety packs of cupcakes can be found at Maine Bay and Berry in State College, and scones are sold at Bonfatto’s Italian Market and Corner Cafe in Bellefonte.
