PennDOT to begin temporary repairs next week at site of Bellefonte wall collapse

South Water Street in Bellefonte could be reopened to two-lane traffic by the end of next week, PennDOT said Wednesday.

Work will begin Monday on a temporary repair and is expected to be finished by the end of the week. Until the work is completed, northbound traffic will continue to detour at Stoney Batter while southbound travelers will use the opposite lane.

The road has been restricted to one lane since a wall collapsed between West High and Mill streets earlier this month. Officials said heavy rainfall from Hurricane Nicole may have been a factor, but they were investigating the cause.

When traffic resumes in both directions, the road will be open until a permanent repair can be made in the spring, PennDOT said. The sidewalk in the area will stay closed due to safety concerns.
