After months of repairs, South Water Street reopens to two-way traffic in Bellefonte

After four months, state Route 150 between West High and Mill streets in Bellefonte reopened to two-way traffic Wednesday.

Since April, northbound traffic heading toward Milesburg has been detoured after a section of the retaining wall along South Water Street — also known as state Route 150 — collapsed in November 2022. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that permanent repairs are complete and the detour is no longer in place.

The sidewalk along this section is also open now, which was closed during the project for public safety, PennDOT said in a release.

The contractor of the project was HRI, Inc. and it was bid at $393,215. Work on the emergency project included removing the temporary wall, building a new retaining wall, paving, drainage improvements, pouring new concrete curbing and sidewalks, pavement markings and other miscellaneous items, PennDOT said.

The wall collapsed in November 2022 after a significant amount of rain from Hurricane Nicole hit the area. At the time, PennDOT said that early indicators pointed to the rain as a contributing factor. Temporary repairs to the wall were done in early December at an estimated cost of $50,000.
