A Centre County man was arrested Tuesday night after an hourslong standoff with dozens of state police troopers and a SWAT team that was heavily armed.

Joshua L. Resides, 41, was charged with misdemeanor counts of terroristic threats and simple assault, as well as a summary count of harassment. District Judge Kelley Gillette-Walker denied bail and he is incarcerated at the Centre County Correctional Facility.

Area residents Amanda Schoen, 36, and Zachary Shawley, 35, told the Centre Daily Times they noticed a heavy police presence about 3 p.m. Tuesday near Sparrow Drive and Grove Street in Boggs Township.

They said the SWAT team arrived by about 5:30 p.m. and appeared to be negotiating with a man, urging him to exit the home. Troopers also used a drone.

It’s unclear when Resides surrendered to police or how. Schoen and Shawley said they heard two bangs by about 8:20 p.m., which they said came after police warned they would deploy tear gas. At about 9 p.m., the majority of police vehicles had left the area while some remained.

Shawley was complimentary of the troopers, saying he felt safe as the standoff unfolded. Schoen said she felt unsure because of the heavy police presence in a community that she said is typically quiet.

“You never think it could happen in a small community neighborhood like this,” Schoen said. “It took me by surprise.”

Centre County dispatchers used a Facebook post at about 7:45 p.m. to urge people to avoid the area. On the scene, a Pennsylvania State Police trooper told the CDT there was no threat to the public and additional details would be released later Tuesday night.

In denying Resides bail, Gillette-Walker cited an alleged threat with a firearm.

A document containing details of what evidence police gathered was not immediately available. Bellefonte and Mount Nittany EMS were also on the scene. (UPDATE: The document was released Wednesday, and more information can be found here.)

Resides’ preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 20.
