A charging document made public Wednesday revealed a Centre County man is accused of aiming a pistol at a woman’s head, an alleged crime that prompted an hourslong standoff Tuesday with dozens of state police officers and a SWAT team.

The woman told state police at Rockview that Joshua L. Resides, 41, of Boggs Township, pointed the weapon at her about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday as she collected her belongings from the home along the 200 block of Sparrow Drive near Milesburg.

After aiming the pistol at her, the woman told troopers that Resides said “I have the right to shoot you” and made a reference to trespassing. He then lowered the firearm, aimed it at her body and recorded her with his cellphone, police wrote in an affidavit of probable cause.

The woman told troopers Resides put the pistol back in his pocket and returned to the home. She called the police about 30 minutes later after the front door was locked.

A heavy police presence surrounded the home for at least five hours. Area residents Amanda Schoen, 36, and Zachary Shawley, 35, told the Centre Daily Times a SWAT team arrived by about 5:30 p.m. and appeared to be negotiating with Resides, urging him to exit the home.

Schoen and Shawley said they heard two bangs by about 8:20 p.m., which they said came after police warned they would deploy tear gas. In a public information report issued Wednesday, a trooper said Resides was arrested after he “came to the door of the residence.”

Shawley was complimentary of the troopers Tuesday night, saying he felt safe as the standoff unfolded. Schoen said she felt unsure because of the heavy police presence in a community that she said is typically quiet.

“You never think it could happen in a small community neighborhood like this,” Schoen said. “It took me by surprise.”

Resides was charged with misdemeanor counts of terroristic threats and simple assault, as well as a summary count of harassment. District Judge Kelley Gillette-Walker denied bail and he is incarcerated at the Centre County Correctional Facility.

No defense lawyer was listed, and the Centre County Public Defender Office said it did not represent him as of Wednesday morning. Resides’ preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 20.
