Looking to forward to Centre County’s 2nd Aldi? The discount grocery chain has set an opening date

Centre County’s second Aldi — on Benner Pike — will open later this month and is on track to officially open March 24, a company executive wrote in an email Wednesday to the CDT.

The announcement involving the discount grocery chain comes five months after the county’s first Aldi opened its doors at Patton Township’s Patton Crossing, a 30-acre commercial and residential site. The newest Aldi, at 780 Benner Pike in College Township, will be about 6% smaller at 19,221 square feet than its first store.

“This second State College store will bring an elevated shopping experience to even more area customers, with a wide selection of quality products at an outstanding value,” Aldi Saxonburg Division Vice President JR Perry said in a written statement. “We’ll be in touch with store opening details as the date approaches.”

The two Aldi stores are a little more than 7 miles apart. The new store offers another grocery-shopping option for residents around College Township, especially after Giant Food Store on East College Avenue closed down and relocated in 2019.

According to Aldi’s corporate website, the first-ever store opened in 1961 in Germany before expanding to the U.S. 15 years later in Iowa. Since then, in just the U.S., Aldi has grown to more than 2,000 stores across 36 states. It employs more than 25,000 people.
