Utility work to continue along South Atherton next week, ahead of major roadwork project
Utility roadwork on South Atherton Street will continue again next week, ahead of the two-year South Atherton Street project that is expected to officially start in July.
According to PennDOT, lane shifts will continue from Monday through Thursday between Logan Avenue and South Allen Street in the State College area. Roadway flaggers will again be present as Columbia Gas continues work to relocate its gas lines.
Columbia Gas is expected to finish sometime before the $20-plus million South Atherton project starts in July. That project cannot start before the company finishes its utility work, which began in March.
According to PennDOT spokesperson Marlaine Fannin, the South Atherton project will be put up for bid Thursday. In a presentation last fall, PennDOT announced a series of expected improvements on South Atherton — including to roadways, drainage, traffic signals and pedestrian crossings.
The project is part of the full Atherton Street reconstruction, which saw North Atherton improvements completed in spring 2020. The South Atherton improvements are expected to be finished sometime in 2024.
Improvements along South Atherton will run from Curtin Road to just beyond Westerly Parkway.
