When will South Allen Street in downtown State College reopen? Here are updated details
South Allen Street in downtown State College is expected to reopen by the end of the month but the construction won’t interfere with the upcoming Pride parade.
South Allen Street has been closed since mid-May when utility replacement began as part the first phase of the Calder Way project. Elton Hayes, State College borough’s Calder Way public relations official, said it will reopen by the end of June, weather permitting.
The State College Pride parade is scheduled for Saturday and the route brings it through South Allen Street. Hayes said the Pride parade route will not be affected by the construction.
“The Borough has worked with the contractor to ensure the Pride Parade (June 8) will still traverse its route on South Allen Street,” Hayes said in an email. “Construction equipment and fencing will be moved from South Allen Street, and the street will be restored in a manner that will allow safe passage for parade participants and attendees.”
In a May 30 update from the borough, it said utilities — including telecommunications, sanitary sewer, electric, stormwater, water and others — are being replaced on South Allen Street and Calder Way, and Pugh Street and Calder Way. Construction crews also resumed installing a new gas main on Calder Way (between Kelly Alley and Fraser Street), the update stated.
During the work, the Pugh Street parking garage is open with a detour (College Avenue to Burrowes Street to Beaver Avenue) implemented.
Last week, the borough’s update stated asphalt paving and concrete restoration began on Calder Way from the McAllister Street intersection near Pugh Street, as well as on Humes Alley. The borough said Calder Way from the McAllister Street intersection to McAllister Alley is expected to reopen to traffic this week.
“South Allen Street — from College Avenue to Calder Way — remains closed to vehicular traffic. Local traffic can access South Allen Street via Beaver Avenue. South Pugh Street is accessible to vehicular traffic via Beaver Avenue. Vehicular access to Calder Way remains closed between McAllister Street to Pugh Street and Calder Way between Allen Street and Fraser Street,” the borough’s update stated on May 30.
The first phase of Calder Way Project was planned to start last summer but due to supply chain challenges, it was delayed. More information on the project can be found online at https://bit.ly/CalderWay.
