Plans for housing development at Westerly Parkway Plaza submitted to State College
After years of anticipating a housing development in the Westerly Parkway Plaza, plans for it have been submitted to the State College borough.
The plan shows multiple dwelling units and row dwelling units proposed for The Retreat at Westerly, located at 560 Westerly Parkway, State College. Each unit would have between two and five bedrooms. In total, 142 units and 546 bedrooms are proposed in the development. Additionally, a 10,423 square foot clubhouse, a pool and other associated amenities are also proposed. The development would sprawl over about 11 acres of land.
The borough’s design review board and planning commission are scheduled to review the plans in November.
A message was left with the borough’s planning office requesting more information.
The Westerly Parkway Plaza has seen many changes over the years. In 2020 the Centre County Gazette reported the property owner of the Westerly Parkway Plaza planned to demolish two older buildings on the northeast side of the property and construct a mixed-use building with student housing and commercial space. Since then tenants, like Goodwill and Fuji & Jade Garden, My Thai, and most recently, The Frame Factory and Gallery, relocated.
Even as businesses moved away from Westerly Parkway or closed completely, like Rite Aid, at least two businesses are moving in. In May Crunch Fitness, a national fitness chain, announced it would open a 36,000-square-foot fitness center in the plaza, and Comic Cove, a comic book store, opened in the spring.
The plans on the borough’s website indicates that those existing businesses in the plaza, such as Weis, will not be impacted by the development.
