Centre County United Way brings back ‘Over The Edge’ fundraiser in a new location

A unique fundraiser for the Centre County United Way is set to return this summer but at a new location due to the ongoing renovations at Penn State’s Beaver Stadium.

“Over The Edge,” a fundraiser where participants raise money to rappel 12 stories down the facade of Hyatt Place, will be held July 29. In the past two years, the event was held at Beaver Stadium but organizers said that wasn’t possible this year due to construction.

The Hyatt Place is 155 feet high and is located in the Fraser Centre on Beaver Avenue in downtown State College. It’s the tallest building downtown.

“We are so excited to bring Over The Edge to downtown State College in July and look forward to creating a fun way for everyone in the community to be involved,” Ja Nae Wian, event organizer, said. “The past two years rappelling off Beaver Stadium was amazing, but due to construction the stadium is not available this year. We are so grateful that the Hyatt came on board without hesitation.”

The event isn’t just for “thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies,” the CCUW wrote in a release. It’s also for people who want to challenge themselves and safely face their fears.

The Hyatt Place was the site of Over the Edge fundraisers in 2018 and 2019 for Interfaith Human Services and FaithCentre.

Those who want to participate can register online and will need to raise a minimum of $1,000 for the Centre County United Way to be eligible. All ages are welcome but those under 18 will need to be accompanied by a legal guardian. Safety requirements say participants need to be between 100 and 300 pounds.

The event was new at the stadium in 2023. Last year, 30 people participated in the event, which was held in October, and raised $39,000.
