Missing 46-year-old State College man found dead, police say

A missing State College man was found dead Thursday, borough police wrote in a press release.

The department said there was no evidence of foul play in the death of 46-year-old Stephen Shimmel. He was last seen Sunday evening in State College and was reported missing Monday morning.

Police had initially asked the community for information about his whereabouts, saying they had hoped to locate him and “check on his welfare.” He was last known to be carrying a portable oxygen tank.

Police did not detail where Shimmel was found. Messages left with the department and the Centre County Coroner’s Office were not immediately returned Friday morning.
