A State College women’s clothing boutique is preparing to start a new chapter later this year.

By A Thread is dashing plans to close as a brick-and-mortar concept and instead moving to downtown State College, owner Emily Boone announced online. The boutique is working to open at 210 S. Allen St. as soon as early September after closing earlier this month at 1341 S. Atherton St., which was more than a mile away from the downtown.

The Allen Street storefront became available when Custom Shoe Repair closed in May following roughly 60 years in business. Boone said she plans to use her shop’s new location to provide a fresh start that maintains “the same boutique you know and love.”

“We’ve been quietly working to bring our vision to life, and we’re counting down the days until we welcome you in,” the boutique wrote online. “We’re back ... and we think you’re going to love what’s next.”

Boone said she plans to share sneak peeks, progress updates and behind-the-scenes access on By A Thread’s social media pages as the boutique prepares to open this fall.

In early June, By A Thread announced plans to shift to online sales and close its former shop at 1341 S. Atherton St. Boone said she arrived at that decision after taking “a hard look at what makes the most sense” for her future while balancing the desire to grow her family with the uncertainty of committing to another long-term lease in that spot.

Shoppers can likely expect a wide-ranging inventory of women’s clothing items, including dresses, tops, bottoms, jumpsuits and accessories, once By A Thread opens on South Allen Street. Hours of operation are not yet available, but the boutique recently opened at 11 a.m. and closed by 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

By A Thread first launched a brick-and-mortar storefront in Bellefonte in 2020. It moved from High Street to Bishop Street before relocating to State College in the fall of 2024. Boone also opened Thread Baby Boutique, a short-lived baby and toddler shop, in 2022.
