A State College women’s clothing boutique will close its brick-and-mortar store this summer.

By A Thread, located at 1341 S. Atherton St., will vacate its storefront space by July 1, owner Emily Boone wrote online. The boutique, which got its start in Bellefonte, will continue serving Centre County through online shopping and community events.

In a statement posted Sunday, Boone compared running her boutique to finding clothing that fits just right, as sizes, styles and business needs are always changing. She said she took “a hard look at what makes the most sense” for her future while balancing her desire to grow her family with the uncertainty of committing to another long-term lease along South Atherton Street.

“This decision carries a lot of emotion because this space held so much more than clothing,” Boone wrote in a statement. “It held conversations, events, laughter, hard seasons, celebrations, friendships and community. It became a place that so many of you made meaningful — not just for me, but for each other, too.”

Boone said she hopes to welcome By A Thread’s customers to another retail space in the future if the right fit comes along. She reiterated that while the boutique’s current chapter is nearing its end, the brand will continue.

“Thank you for every purchase, every kind word, every event attended, every shared post, every recommendation to a friend and every bit of support you gave this little boutique over the years,” Boone wrote. “You helped turn an idea into something far bigger than I ever imagined, and I’m so grateful for that.”

By A Thread customers are invited to a farewell event on Saturday, June 20, at the South Atherton Street store. There, at the “Red, White & Thank You” celebration, Boone will join the community in saying goodbye to the space while toasting to what may come next.

By A Thread opened its brick-and-mortar storefront in Bellefonte in 2020, eventually moving from High Street to Bishop Street before relocating to State College in the fall of 2024. Boone also launched Thread Baby Boutique, a short-lived baby and toddler boutique, in 2022.

Boone’s boutique offers a wide-ranging inventory of women’s clothing items, including dresses, tops, bottoms, jumpsuits and accessories. You can shop online at byathreadboutique.com or stop by from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. The boutique is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
