Bellefonte man found with 95 bags of heroin receives state prison sentence

A Bellefonte man who attempted to sell heroin from a borough residence was sentenced Thursday to at least two years in state prison, though additional time may be added.

Matthew Dean, 21, was accused by State College police in February of possessing 95 bags of heroin at 234 N. Penn St. He attempted to flush the drugs down a toilet when officers issued a search warrant, an officer wrote in a criminal complaint.

“I would just like to apologize to the Commonwealth, as well as the people who I have harmed,” Dean told Centre County Judge Jonathan Grine before the sentence was announced.

Dean pleaded guilty in September to one felony count of possession with intent to deliver and one misdemeanor count each of destroying evidence and possession of brass knuckles.

His maximum sentence is four years, though other pending criminal cases could change both his sentence and credit for time served, which is 302 days.

Defense lawyer Julian Allatt declined to comment after the hearing.

Dean was accused of selling the drug alongside Clayton DuBois, 21, of Bellefonte. He pleaded guilty in November to one felony count of possession with intent to deliver and is scheduled to be sentenced in January.
