A State College charter school and police are investigating after a stray bullet was found inside the school building.
Officials at the Young Scholars of Central Pennsylvania Charter School discovered the bullet Tuesday and immediately notified law enforcement, principal and CEO Levent Kaya wrote in a letter to families. An initial review suggested the stray bullet presents “no indication of any threat” to the school’s students and staff.
“I’m grateful for how calmly and responsibly our school community responded,” Kaya wrote in an email Wednesday. “We will continue normal operations while staying in close communication with law enforcement as they complete their review.”
School safety remains “an ongoing effort,” Kaya wrote. Police have not recommended any changes to Young Scholars’ school safety procedures.
It is not yet clear how the stray bullet entered the building at 1530 Westerly Parkway in State College or who may be responsible for it. Young Scholars officials are expected to work closely with police while the investigation continues.
“Please know that student safety is — and will always be — our highest priority,” Kaya wrote to Young Scholars families. “We are sharing this information with you out of our commitment to transparency and to ensure that our community stays informed.”
Kaya encouraged anyone with information related to incident to contact him by calling the school at 814-237-9727 or emailing kaya@yscp.org.
The Young Scholars charter school instructs students between kindergarten and the eighth grade and is one of just six Pennsylvania schools offering International Baccalaureate programming for both elementary and middle-school level students. The State College Area School District in May approved a five-year renewal of the school’s charter.
