Changes to Penn State campus parking & more will go into effect for student move-in
Penn State has announced a number of parking, traffic and transit changes for next week as students begin to return to campus for the fall semester.
Classes begin on Aug. 25 but some changes will go into effect beginning the night of Aug. 17. Student resident parking lots — Lot 22 at Eastview Terrace, Lot 42 at Nittany Apartments, Lot 81 at South/Pollock Halls and Lot 82 at East Halls — will be reserved for 30-minute unloading periods beginning Aug. 17, Penn State Transportation Services said in a news release. All vehicles will need to be removed from the lots by midnight.
Students who have permits for these areas will need to park their vehicles in Jordan East or Stadium West during the move-in period. Overnight parking will be allowed there through Aug. 24. They can move their vehicles back to the lot beginning at 6 p.m. Aug. 24.
Some faculty and staff parking lots will be reserved for students to unload their vehicles only from Aug. 18-24. Those areas include Brown E; Green C; Green N (permit holders at these areas must park at Nittany Deck, Jordan East or Stadium West); Yellow H, including the softball, IM building and the section near Hastings and Snyder Hall (permit holders can park at other Yellow H lots, Jordan East or Stadium West); Yellow J (permit holders can park at HUB Deck, Jordan East or Stadium West); and both sections of Yellow T (permit holders can park at Jordan East or Stadium West).
To help accommodate traffic during student arrival, Burrowes Road will have southbound traffic only between Curtin and Pollock roads from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Aug. 20-23.
Other lots and parking decks will be impacted while students arrive on campus, including Yellow D (East Deck and surface lot) and the HUB Deck.
Level 1 and Level 2 of the East Deck will be reserved for student arrival unloading only, and the Yellow D surface lot at Tener Hall will be closed from Aug. 16-23.
Permit holders for Yellow D can park at Jordan East or Stadium West. Hourly visitor parking at the East Deck will be limited, Penn State said.
Some parts of Bigler Road between Curtin Road and Park Avenue may also be restricted at times due to heavy traffic, the university cautioned.
Sections of the HUB Deck below the plaza level entrance will be available only for student arrival unloading between Aug. 18-24. If the deck reaches capacity, Yellow C permit holders can park in Jordan East and Stadium West. Hourly visitor parking will not be available. Only people with YC, ADA and arrival unloading permits can access the deck, Penn State said.
For campus transit, CATA’s full service schedule will begin Aug. 18. The campus shuttle via College Avenue and via Beaver Avenue will operate on the summer schedules through Aug. 22.
“As a result of the southbound-only traffic restriction on Burrowes Road between Curtin Road and Pollock Road, northbound CATA and Campus Shuttle stops located along Burrowes Road between College Avenue and Curtin Road will not be serviced from Wednesday, Aug. 20, through Saturday, Aug. 23,” the release stated. “This will impact northbound stops at Reber Building, Deike Building, Hosler Building, Waring Commons and Rec Hall.”
CATA will have some detours during this time. The White Loop will turn right on the Curtin Road extension from Curtin Road, turn left on North Atherton and then turn left on Beaver Avenue. After that, normal routing will resume. The southbound Atherton Connector will continue straight on North Atherton southbound and turn left on Beaver Avenue before resuming normal routing.
