A Missouri couple was left stunned when they saw just how much their scratch-off lottery ticket won.

The wife bought a “$1,000,000 Black Diamond” scratch-off ticket at a Maryland Heights store, according to a June 4 news release from the Missouri Lottery.

“That’s where I shop and every once in a while I’ll get a Lottery ticket,” she told lottery officials. “I thought, ‘You know what? I’m going to do this machine.’”

The next morning, she scratched the ticket and saw she won a prize.

“I scratched the first one, and it was $50,000!” she said

She called her husband over to look at the ticket.

“She was crying at the time almost,” her husband told lottery officials.

But, she had actually won more than that. As they finished scratching the ticket, they realized they won the $1 million prize.

“He went ballistic! I thought he was going to fall off the couch!” she said. “And of course I remained calm and started crying.”

After gathering their composure, the couple decided to play a trick on their children.

“We set up a FaceTime with them, and we just told them we needed to talk,” she said. “They were expecting bad news… We started off and I said, ‘You know your Dad and I have been married a long time.’”

But, she said they couldn’t keep the act up for long. They showed them the ticket and how much they won.

“My youngest was just sitting there with his mouth open. He couldn’t believe it!” she said.

Maryland Heights is a 20-mile drive west from St. Louis.
