A lucky lottery rookie in Maryland dropped to his knees to thank God after finding out of his big win, lottery officials said.

The Greenbelt player had only been playing lottery games for five months when he won $50,000 off a 20X The Cash scratch-off, the Maryland Lottery said in a Dec. 20 news release.

“My kids thought I was joking, but I was in disbelief,” he told lottery officials. “This feels like a dream come true.”

The man said he began playing the lottery twice a week after talking with a co-worker. He plans to use his winnings to buy a home for his family and create a meaningful holiday for loved ones, he told the lottery.

He bought the winning ticket from a store in Prince George’s County, lottery officials said.

The 20X The Cash scratch-off game went on sale in January and one more top prize remains, lottery officials said.

The game also features remaining prizes ranging from $5 to $1,000, and the odds of winning are 1 in 3.77, according to the lottery.

Greenbelt is about a 15-mile drive northeast from Washington, D.C.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
