Check your pantry: Packaged tomatoes sold in Pennsylvania recalled for salmonella
Ray & Mascari Inc. is recalling tomatoes due to the potential risk of salmonella, and the product may have made its way to Pennsylvania stores.
The company is recalling 4 Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes packaged in clam shell containers with the “VINE RIPE TOMATOES” label, as well as the words “Packed by Ray & Mascari Inc., Indianapolis, IN 46204.”
The recalled items have a case label with the lot number RM250424 15250B or RM250427 15250B.
If you have the product in your pantry or fridge, you should discard it right away and not consume the tomatoes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration release says.
“Customers who received the recalled lots have been notified and provided information to further contact their customers and distribution centers with recall instructions,” the May 3 FDA release reads.
The tomatoes were sold by Gordon Food Service stores. According to Gordon Food Service’s website, there are four stores in Pennsylvania — two in Pittsburgh, one in Greensburg and one in Monroeville.
The product was recalled not only in Pennsylvania, but also Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
Salmonella is a bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract. People can experience diarrhea, stomach cramps and fever up to three days after exposure to the bacteria, Mayo Clinic says. If the infection goes further than the intestinal tract, severe complications can occur.
There have been no reports of illnesses connected to the recalled, the FDA says.
Anyone with questions about the recall should contact Ray & Mascari at 1-317-637-0234. If anyone believes they are experiencing an illness due to the product, they have been asked to report it to the company.
