The best hospital in Pennsylvania is a 3.5-hour drive from State College, according to a recent ranking from U.S. News & World Report.

The publication released its Best Regional Hospitals Report for 2025, and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center took Pennsylvania’s top spot. Penn Presbyterian is one of the hospitals in the University of Pennsylvania system and is located at 51 N. 39th St. in Philadelphia.

U.S. News looked at the performance of more than 4,000 hospitals based on factors like risk-adjusted mortality rates, preventable complications and level of nursing care, according to a July 29 press release.

“These local hospital rankings, entirely performance-driven, equip individuals and their families, in consultation with their medical providers, to choose the highest quality care available in their own communities,” Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News, said in the press release.

Penn Presbyterian was nationally ranked across 11 adult specialties, and was rated high in performance for one adult specialty and 22 conditions and procedures.

Its high-ranked specialties include cancer (No. 10 in the nation); cardiology, heart and vascular surgery (No. 9 in the nation); ear, nose and throat (No. 7 in the nation); geriatrics (No. 8 in the nation); neurology and neurosurgery (No. 8 in the nation) and orthopedics (No. 9 in the nation).

In addition to the first place in the state recognition, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center also gained a spot on U.S. News & World Report’s honor roll, which recognizes the best of the best. Also on the honor roll were hospitals like John Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, Stanford Health Care and more.

The Centre Daily Times has reached out to Penn Presbyterian for comment.

For those in Centre County, Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College was ranked 20th in the state for best regional hospitals, with high-performing marks for 10 procedures and conditions.
