Heat advisory issued for Friday in Centre County with high temperatures in the 90s
Friday is going to be hot and humid in State College and other parts of Southern Centre County.
The National Weather Service at State College issued a heat advisory for South Centre County, which includes State College, for Friday afternoon. Between noon and 8 p.m. Friday, hot temperatures and high humidity will strike Southern Centre County, including State College, as a maximum heat index of 100 to 102 is expected, according to the heat advisory. The heat index is “what the temperature feels like to the human body when relative humidity is combined with the air temperature,” according to the NWS website.
The NWS State College forecast for Friday shows a mostly sunny and hot day, with a high temperature of near 93 degrees F. There’s a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Friday night’s forecast is mostly cloudy, with a low around 71 degrees. There’s a chance of rain and thunderstorms after 2 a.m., it states.
The heat advisory notes that because of the heat and humidity, heat illnesses may occur. The NWS recommends knowing the signs of and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which include dizziness, thirst, heavy sweating, nausea and weakness.
People should drink plenty of fluids throughout the day and check on relatives and neighbors. Pets should be provided with water and shelter from the sun, as well.
The NWS also suggests rescheduling any strenuous activities to the early morning to evening, and to wear lightweight and loose fitting clothes. And, as always, children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles, the advisory states.
The average high temperature for July 28 in State College is 81 degrees F, according to AccuWeather’s website, and the record high was set in 1940 at 94 degrees. Last year, the high temperature was 81 degrees.
