Centre County schools close, delay due to power outages, road closures from Sunday’s storm
With power outages still spread across Centre County the day after a powerful storm caused damage and road closures, some area schools are closed or delayed Monday.
After initially calling for a two-hour delay while assessing the situation, Bellefonte Area School District changed to a full closure on Monday morning. State College Area School District will operate on a two-hour delay, though Ferguson Township Elementary School will be closed due to a continued power outage.
Other Centre County school districts are operating as scheduled.
A brief but severe storm Sunday afternoon brought rain and high winds to the area, knocking out power to more than 10,000 West Penn Power customers for hours. As of 7:30 a.m. Monday, 3,793 customers have not had power restored in Centre County, according to West Penn Power. That includes 331 in State College Borough, 318 in Bellefonte and 421 in Benner Township.
Some road closures are still in effect, including Fox Hollow Road, which is closed between Bernel Road and Fillmore Road due to downed utility lines. State Route 879 is shut down from the Pine Glen Fire Company to the Clearfield County line due to significant storm damage, Centre County 911 posted on Facebook.
