Here’s what’s closed, canceled in snow-covered Centre County on Monday
Schools, businesses and government offices have announced closures for Monday after Sunday’s snowstorm brought double-digit snow accumulation to Centre County.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Centre County and the surrounding area that’s in effect through 1 p.m. Monday. Gov. Josh Shapiro signed a disaster declaration Friday to free up state funds for storm response efforts.
While numerous local businesses and restaurants closed Sunday during the storm, other businesses announced closures or delays for Monday as well.

Centre County schools
- Penn State announced Sunday that all classes, work and activities at the University Park campus are canceled from 5 a.m. Monday through 5 a.m. Tuesday.
- Philipsburg-Osceola Area School District announced Sunday that all classes and student activities are canceled Monday.
- State College Area School District schools will be closed Monday, the district announced Sunday afternoon. The board of directors meeting is also canceled.
- The Penns Valley Area School District will close its buildings Monday and provide students with a flexible instruction day.
- St. John the Evangelist Catholic School in Bellefonte will be closed Monday, the school posted on Facebook Sunday.
- Keystone Central School District will have a flexible instruction day Monday, the district announced on social media Friday afternoon.
- Tyrone Area School District will have a flexible instruction day Monday, the district announced on social media Friday evening.
Transit disruptions
- Centre Area Transportation Authority suspended all operations on Sunday and will operate on a reduced service schedule Monday due to Penn State’s closure, according to CATA’s website. There will be no White Loop, Red Link, or Express services, and limited Blue Loop service. All other services will operate on their normal schedules.
Government offices
- Centre County Government and courts will be closed Monday and open again noon Tuesday, the government announced Friday. “Any scheduled court proceedings effected by the closure and/or delay will be rescheduled to a later date,” said Kendra J. Miknis, a court administrator, in a news release.
- Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority crews will not be on the roads Monday, and all recycling in Benner, College, Ferguson, Harris and Patton townships will be pushed back one day.
- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation driver license and photo center in Pleasant Gap, and all others across Pennsylvania, will be closed Monday and Tuesday, according to a PennDOT release.
Health care facilities
- Mount Nittany Health outpatient locations, including ExpressCare, will be closed Monday until noon, the health system wrote on social media.
- Penn State Health State College locations will be closed to in-person visits on Monday.
Grocery stores
- Weis stores reopened 8 a.m. Monday after being closed Sunday.
Travel disruptions
- Monday morning flights from State College are either cancelled or will see steep delays, according to flight trackers. Afternoon and evening flights are set to depart as scheduled, as of 8:45 a.m. Monday. All Sunday flights had been cancelled.
- Vehicle bans on Centre County’s interstates were lifted Monday, but 45 mph speed restrictions remain. Bans on motorcycles, RVs, trailers and empty tractor-trailers are still in effect east of the Centre County line as of 8:30 a.m. Monday. On Sunday, all non-emergency vehicles except passenger cars and trucks were banned from interstates.
- Vehicle bans on state Route 350 between Philipsburg and Bald Eagle were lifted Monday. Commercial vehicles had been banned on the road Sunday, according to a PennDOT press release.
Parking disruptions and snow emergencies
- Penn State parking will see several disruptions, the university announced Friday. The roof levels of campus parking decks will be closed through Monday. Parking was prohibited at all Penn State faculty and staff surface parking lots from 11:59 p.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Monday as part of a “Midnight Clear” declaration.
- Bellefonte Borough declared a snow emergency that took effect at 10 p.m. Saturday. During the snow emergency, no parking is allowed on “designated snow emergency routes,” the borough said in a social media post Saturday. The post also urges residents to limit travel to essential purposes.
- College Township declared a snow emergency effective 10 p.m. Saturday and will remain in effect until 48 hours after the storm has ended and the streets have been cleared, the township said in an alert. All sidewalks will need to be cleared of snow and ice within 24 hours after the storm has ended. The township also reminded residents that shoveling, blowing or plowing snow onto the streets at any time is not permitted.
- Ferguson Township residents must move vehicles off township streets after two inches of snow have fallen, the township said on social media Friday afternoon. Vehicles may not be street parked until 48 hours after the snowfall, it added.
- Harris Township declared a snow emergency Friday afternoon, effective 10 p.m. Saturday. Residents must move vehicles from township streets until the emergency has ended; the township has not announced an end date or time. Public parking will be available in Nittany View Park, Blue Spring Park, Yoder Preserve and the municipal building parking lot, the township said.
- Patton Township declared a snow emergency Friday afternoon, effective 10 p.m. Saturday. Residents must move vehicles from township streets until the emergency has ended; the township has not announced an end date or time.
- Philipsburg residents must move vehicles off portions of Pine Street ahead of Sunday’s storm to facilitate plowing, borough staffers told the Centre Daily Times Friday. Temporary signage has been posted to indicate where vehicles must be moved from.
- State College Borough is under a snow emergency effective 8:30 a.m. Sunday. All parked vehicles must be removed from public roadways.
- Unionville residents must move vehicles “as far off the road as possible” ahead of this weekend’s storm to facilitate plowing, the borough announced on its website.
Sporting events
- Penn State wrestling’s dual at Maryland that had been scheduled for Sunday took place at 5 p.m. Saturday.
- Nittany Lion Fencing’s Penn State Invitational has been postponed until Feb. 28. It was originally set to take place Sunday.
