Former Penn State standout D.J. Newbill named in report on federal investigation

Former Penn State standout D.J. Newbill is among the names included in a report by Yahoo Sports on the federal investigation into college basketball.

Yahoo’s report revealed documents and bank records of former NBA agent Andy Miller of ASM Sports and his former associate Christian Dawkins. The documents show the potential for “NCAA rules issues — both current and retroactive — for at least 20 Division I basketball programs and more than 25 players.

Newbill’s name appears on a balance sheet “as of December 31, 2015,” under “Loan to Players.” It shows his name with a loan of $2,000. Another document shows Newbill’s name and the $2,000 total with a note of “paying back July 2017.”

“We take the information very seriously,” Penn State coach Patrick Chambers said of the Yahoo report. “I think right now the university needs time to look into that story. Until we know more, I’m not going to comment any further on that.”

Newbill finished his career at Penn State in 2015, playing his final game for the Nittany Lions in the Big Ten tournament in March that year.
