Penn State men’s basketball adds former Drexel leading scorer from transfer portal
Penn State men’s basketball made its first transfer addition of the offseason Thursday afternoon. Former Drexel guard Camren Wynter announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions and head coach Micah Shrewsberry via his personal Twitter account.
Wynter joins the program with one year of eligibility remaining and a good resume as a scorer. The 6-foot-2 guard was at the controls of the Dragon offense in 2021-2022 and led the team in scoring and assists with 15.8 points per game and 4.6 assists per game. He’s a downhill guard who can put pressure on the rim with his attacking ability.
The senior guard can also step out and shoot from distance, even if that wasn’t the case last season. He only shot 27.8% from deep in his final season at Drexel, but shot 35.5% from 3-point range in 2019-2020 and 41.5% in 2020-2021.
He has a strong chance to start in his lone season at Penn State, but if he doesn’t he could easily be the team’s top bench scorer. Wynter will help replace one of the team’s departures — former Nittany Lion Sam Sessoms — as a primary ball handler who can score in a pinch from all three levels of the floor.
His ability to handle the ball will be key as Penn State tries to add more of that skill this season in order to run its offense without relying too much on senior guard Jalen Pickett.
Wynter is the first portal addition for the Nittany Lions but likely won’t be the last. The Nittany Lions have another open scholarship to fill heading into Shrewsberry’s second season as the team’s head coach.
